Advent Calendar Countdown 2018- December 3rd

(Editors Note: Due to a combination of a new coding update error, and also laziness, I'm running a bit late with these. But, you know, it's fine. Just go with it.)

Happy Holidays, everyone! I’m usually not very good at getting into the festivities of the season, and I want to try to change that. So, to get into the mood for the season, I’ve decided that for every day of Advent until Christmas, I’m gonna do a review of an episode of a TV show or a movie that’s centered around Christmas. Because hey? Why not!

But, umm... My tastes are not everyone else’s, so there might be a few weird ones here. I randomly grabbed some Christmas episodes and stuff off the top of my head, but there’s not really any pattern to this. I’m just going with it. I’ve seen most of what I’m writing about before, but I’ve added a few surprises for myself too. Hope you enjoy!

December 3 Futurama, Xmas Story

A thousand years in the future, the Planet Express crew is visiting a ski lodge. Of course, in this time, pine trees are extinct, and robots are common place, but that’s what you get when you visit the future. Fry, our everman hero from 1999, talks about Christmas, and no one’s ever heard of it in this century. You see, language has evolved, it’s now called Xmas, and that's one of those jokes where no one gives enough credit to how much thought the writing team of Futurama put into their jobs.

Anyway, the point where this goes from “any Futurama is generally ok television” to “OMG I LOVE THIS SHOW!” is the reveal of Santa Claus. THE Santa Claus. Who is a robot. And also an evil murdering psychopath.

In 2801, the Friendly Robot Company tried to build a robot Santa to determine who’d been naughty and who’d been nice, and the results were DISASTROUS. So now, every Xmas, Santa comes to Earth, to punish the guilty, and he thinks everyone is guilty. This is the kind of high concept nonsense I can really get behind.

Luckily, the day is eventually saved, thanks to literally the only person in the world on Santa’s nice list, eternal punching bag Dr. Zoidberg, and the pogostick that Santa just gave him. And if that sentence can’t convince you to love this show, I don’t know what’s going to. We’re just cut from different cloths, I guess.

It’s not really related to the holidays, but I think this might be the episode that sort of starts Futurama’s key relationship deal with Fry and Leela, so that’s important for the show. Also, Santa’s gonna show up in many episodes latter on, and maybe I just have a fondness for mass murdering robots, but he’s always great.

There’s also a parrot that plays a prominent part in this episode, so, you know, if you’re into parrots at Christmas time, there’s that.

Best Line: “Xmas Eve. Another pointless day where I accomplish nothing.” *takes drink*
